What Actually is Sphero BB-8?
The new Star Wars movie that was released back in December 2015 could not come alone. Sphero, the well-famed robotics company known as Orbotix, have decided to break new ground on the market by releasing one of the most famous robots that appears in the Stars Wars –The Force Awakens movie sequel.
Sphero BB-8 is one of the most praised toys ever to be invented and by far one of the most successful products from a marketing standpoint.
This new gadget is a fictional droid toy that appears in the seventh movie of the world-renowned Star Wars franchise. Because the BB-8 is mainly a physical prop in the movie rather than an object with its own personality, such as R2-D2, there is no surprise that this new gadget has been greeted with so much interest by everyone.
Both toy communities and Star Wars fans were thrilled to find out that Sphero BB-8 was going to hit the market in September 2015. BB-8 is designed for original entertainment purposes and has tons of unique benefits for the whole family.
Why this New Concept is Catchy?
Gone are the days when lame toys were hot on the market. Instead, people want to play with something real, something that has a strong connotation in their minds. As a fan of the Star Wars franchise, I was thrilled to hear that Sphero would release this droid.
Not only that this was one of my favorite “passive characters” in the movie, but this concept is quite unique on the market. Of course, you can find a lot of Batman and Superman toys, but taking a Star Wars droid and transforming it into a fun toy is something totally unique.
Star Wars fans could not be happier to hear of the release of this new toy. What’s really crazy about this new toy is that it works exactly like in the trailer. You can practically do everything they show in the spoiler video, and even more.
Sphero BB-8 – What Does it Do?
This is by far one of the most advanced app-enabled toys on the market. In order to make the most out of its features and capitalize on its benefits, you need to have an Android or iOS phone. Without a smartphone, this gadget becomes a desktop ornament that might turn a few heads and several admiring glances, but nothing more.
After charging it for at least three hours, right after removing it from the box, the BB-8 is eager to pair with your personal smartphone. This requires you to open up your smartphone app on your phone or tablet and place the toy near your smart device.
These two devices will automatically pair once a connection is established. As an additional feature, once a connection has been made, you will be treated with the famous Star Wars tune we all know so well. You can control the device using the in-app joystick.
You can steer your toy by drawing your finger on the screen, around and inside the circle. Be aware not to try the Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid for the first time while it rests on a counter. I tried it on a counter for the first time, but without the maneuvering experience, it quickly flew towards the edge and succumbed to gravity.
Luckily, this is one of a kind droid that can survive plenty of hits, so it withstanded the fall.
Except for the tiny floating head that can spin separately from the body, this device includes a couple of wheels and a strong body. Many users who had the misfortune of driving their toy head-on into a wall or furniture noticed that there was no scratch on their BB-8’s.
The magnet that connects that head with the body is strong enough to ensure the head won’t fall off if the gadget would collide with an obstacle. However, even if the head would fall off, putting it back on is as easy as pie.
Making the Most out of your Toy
Once the Sphero BB-8 is connected to your smartphone, you can set it in one of the following 3 modes: drive, patrol and message.
While the touchscreen controls are highly responsive, it might take some time for you to get used to them. Drive mode enables you to discover your true driving personality and trigger some pre-programmed movements and animations.
what is a droid without the capability to record holographic messages? Even though this technology does not exist at the moment, the guys from Sphero have found a unique way to create it through augmented reality. You can practically record a message on your smartphone or tablet and use the message feature to share this message to your friends.
However, they will only be able to see the message when looking at the smartphone screen. Kids will definitely love this feature.
this is the autonomous mode offered by the creators of Sphero BB-8. This mode is similar to letting an excited and happy puppy roaming around in your home. Because this device does not have any sensors, it will continually crash into your feet, furniture and walls.
However, as this gadget will explore your interior space, it will eventually learn what objects to avoid by building a map that is stored inside its tiny brain. When your gadget is exploring on its own, the app shows its speed, the path it’s traveled and the total distance covered.
While collisions aren’t a problem, the falls might be. In case your little friend rolls down the stairs and the head falls off, you might need to go and put it back on. As fun as it is watching the BB-8 rolling around your home and reacting to the obstacles it encounters by using adorable head movements, the real fun is the drive mode which gives you full access to your robot.
